Dinner on Us

Food and Hospitality in MENA Cultures

Indeed, the ritual of hospitality and generosity during meals holds significant cultural importance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. "One eats with their eyes first" is a phrase that stresses how important it is to present food properly because it can affect how much someone enjoys it, their appetite, and how much the guest feels honored. At home, the practice of providing more food than can be consumed underscores the host's desire to express abundance and care for their guests. It is a way of ensuring that guests feel welcomed, honored, and valued while also demonstrating the host's ability to meet their needs.

At a restaurant, the act of arguing over the bill or who will pay for the meal is a common social custom in many cultures across the MENA region. It reflects a genuine desire to express generosity and hospitality, with each person insisting on covering the cost as a sign of respect and appreciation for the company of others. This gesture can sometimes lead to a friendly quarrel as individuals vie to be the ones who demonstrate the most generosity. The discreet act of slipping the waiter an early payment, often done when someone excuses themselves to the restroom, is another manifestation of this cultural norm. It allows the paying person to do so without drawing attention to themselves or causing further disagreement among the guests. This practice is a thoughtful way of expressing generosity and consideration for others without causing discomfort or conflict.

Overall, these customs and rituals surrounding hospitality and generosity during meals in the MENA region reflect the importance of social bonds, communal values, and the desire to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests. We at the Salaam MENA Cultural Center embrace these traditions with 'Dinner on Us' events which align with the Student Affairs mission and UIUC's strategic plan, of fostering global leaders and a sense of belonging and supporting personal, academic, and professional growth.
